A Big Congratulations to Catherine Vaananen our New Honorary Mayor of Sunland-Tujunga
 My name is Catherine Vaananen, your Honorary Mayor elected, along with my rescue dog Buddy, in an amazing election on the Fourth of July, 2009. I say ‘amazing’ because I never expected to win. The reason I entered the race at all was to raise money for my Lodge, the Sunland-Tujunga Elks. Then I was told, “Catherine, you don’t stand a chance!” which was the wrong thing to say to me, as anyone who knows me can attest. I was, after all, born in Brooklyn, New York, spent the last 23 years in Sunland, which will toughen, mellow and shape anyone up and… ‘nuff said.
I would like to thank my fellow Elks and American Legion friends; and especially my campaign manager, Marilyn Straight. I was surprised and delighted by my victory and deeply thank the people of Sunland-Tujunga for giving me this opportunity to serve.
As your Honorary Mayor (and as a person) my main interest is in supporting our troops overseas and although this is not a local issue I hope we can still do something about it. I know many of your feel the same way and I am very interested in hearing any suggestions or bright ideas you may have on things we can do towards that end.

Applications are being accepted for the position of Sunland-Tujunga’s Honorary Sheriff. The filing fee is $45 and the deadline for submitting applications is March 17th by 11 am at the Sunland Tujunga Chamber of Commerce office, located at 8250 Foothill Blvd. Please contact the Chamber office during regular business hours at 818 352-4433 for more details on the applicable rules and regulations.
