On January 10, 2012 the Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce welcomed a guest speaker, Los Angeles City Controller and mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel, at the Tierra del Sol Foundation. Ms. Greuel addressed key issues, such as how the City can do more to help businesses and create jobs. Job creation and cutting red tape for businesses is essential to ensuring that Los Angeles thrives. She spearheaded the business tax reform efforts in the city and supports the proposal to eliminate gross receipts tax. In the last two and a half years the City Controller's office has conducted almost 50 audits discovering approximately $100 million in potential waste, fraud, and abuse. Controller Greuel released a report on performance-based budgeting in order to hold Departments accountable for achieving their goals. She also recently released an audit on the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) which found spending violations including travel and meal expenses that were excessive. Following some of her audits Ms. Greuel has presented a score card to the audited departments which in turn caused departments to respond more quickly to her audits. Another key issue involving education was briefly discussed and it is Ms. Greuel's opinion that it is essential that the City strive to improve the educational standards throughout the entire Unified School District. Encouraging new businesses into our area is strongly influenced by the quality of education we can offer the children of these families who move to our area. Ms. Greuel believes better education standards are achieved by hiring quality school principals who will be involved in the management, support and accountability of performance under their direction. Ms. Greuel is currently actively campaigning for the elected position of Los Angeles City Mayor.
